In 2012 Penthouse Hairdressing turned 30
Meet Our Artistic Team
GAVIN & KAREN
2012 was very special to Karen and Gavin Pound because they Celebrated 30 years with their salon, ‘Penthouse Hairdressing’, in Bunbury. Named ‘Penthouse’ because the only place available to rent back in 1982 was on the top floor of 133 Victoria St, (therefore, a Penthouse suite), Karen and Gavin started with just one apprentice and plenty of enthusiasm.
Karen and Gavin have trained some 45 apprentices and some of the highlights have been having some compete and win in local and state competitions as well as having one apprentice represent W.A. in the Work skills Challenge in Melbourne and Intercoiffure National Guialme competitions at the National Conference.
In 2001, Penthouse Hairdressing was a state finalist in the Telstra Small Business Awards in the Under 20 employee’s category.
Over the years they have had their two children also come into the business with them,
They both left Bunbury to travel and work in different surrounds, Daniel has since branched out to become a self-employed Glazier… Lisa has re-joined her mum and dad back behind the chair to once again to be one of the members of the family business.
Lisa started her apprenticeship with her parents Gavin and Karen after leaving year 11. Lisa completed her apprenticeship and continued to help run the two salons that Penthouse Hairdressing had at the time. Lisa was cutting a family friends hair one day when he asked her if she would like to go out to lunch, she accepted the invitation and the story continues to this day, Lisa and Stephen married and decided they would like to start a family, Sam their first son was born, however as Stephen was working for Wesfarmers this meant they would be moving away, first stop Tambellup. Lisa set her own little salon up in Tambellup as there was no one there doing hairdressing, it was a good move as they didn’t take long to get into the community, lots of moves to follow, Moora, Kojonup then Southern Cross, however with their family growing fast the decision to come back to Bunbury was made.
Lisa is back in the salon again and is enjoying the company of the clients and we love having her back….
Her spare time is all about the family, football, motor bikes, cows, but they all enjoy the outdoors camping and entertaining.
Linda started her apprenticeship in Donnybrook in 1973, her move to Bunbury saw her start working with Gavin and Karen when they first came to live in Bunbury from Perth to open the Crimpers Salon right here in the Plaza Shopping Centre.
Linda has been an amazing inspiration to all who work with her and her tireless enthusiasm for the hairdressing industry and continuation to learn and to teach is to her amazing credit.
Linda is always there to help whether it is for a junior to learn a basic or a photo shoot that is challenging. We asked Linda what keeps her motivated and her reply… “No day is ever the same, something new is always happening” “Creating, and the look of appreciation when I have pleased someone is a Great Feeling..!”
Linda is married to Sam with two grown up children, she loves spending special times with them and the rest of her family. Travel is on her constant agenda.
Aleisha started her hairdressing career in a salon called Giaco’s in Manjimup 2006. When a move to Bunbury with her partner for his work meant Aleisha would be looking for a new salon to work in, Aleisha was recommended by our Wella representative to call in and see us here at Penthouse and she has been with us ever since.
Aleisha loves spending time with her family and is often on the road to Manjimup for the weekend, she loves cooking and spends time doing craft when time permits, she is also a keen hockey player.
We asked Aleisha what keeps her motivated and interested in hairdressing and her reply…..
“Firstly…. My clients…. knowing that I am making them Happy.”
“Secondly, keeping up with all the new trends in fashion and techniques is always fun and there’s always plenty to learn.”
With two beautiful little girls and a very busy husband, her life is full but she still loves coming to work.
“My love for hairdressing started 4 years ago when I picked up a hair brush and realised, I wanted to explore the possibility of a career in hairdressing. My mum told me later, she knew I was a natural.
I have always loved hair, but I travelled a few different yellow brick roads before I was lucky enough to be asked to join the team at Penthouse Hairdressing in 2015 as a mature age apprentice.
My passion is the enjoyment I get out of creative colouring and seeing the end result. Plus, I love the ‘art’ in men’s haircutting, it can be so creative.
When I am not in the salon, you can usually find me playing darts or watching the speedway. I also enjoy downtime with family and friends or just having some ‘me’ time.
A very talented hairdresser (Gavin) once told me “you will never work a day in your life if you love the job you do” and he was 100% right….!
Dreams really do come true.”
